St Ives helps aspiring gymnast

Following her local gym on Twitter meant that St Ives SM Personnel Juli Sumpter got the branch involved with a rather unusual fundraising project.

Juli follows the Huntingdon Gym and just before Christmas she learnt about an aspiring gymnast, Harry O’Driscoll.

It transpired that the 12-year-old was sleeping in a tent in his garden for a year to help fundraise for a £100,000 gym extension.  Currently Olympians like Louis Smith and beginner gymnasts are sharing the same space for training.

“His mum suggested sleeping in a tent as a joke, but Harry decided it would be a great way to raise money”, explains Juli.  He began sleeping in his tent last August and Juli put his case forward for Community  Matters last month.

Harry trains at the gym after school every day and at weekends.

Clearly the training is paying of as Harry enters the British Championship in March.  Meanwhile the branch has raised £500 for the gym through Community Matters.
