Dinky Dorking dazzlers

It was at the end of an era last Wednesday when the doors finally closed on our old Dorking branch the night before they re-opened at the ‘Dinky Dorking’ store up the road, where we will continue to trade for the next 14 months or so.

After trading in the same building for 52 years – our Dorking branch was one of our first original shops to open – the shop has now relocated to a 3,000 sq ft temporary site further along the high street, while the original building is pulled down and a brand new state of the art 24,000 sq ft branch is being built.

  • I worked as a student when Waitrose Supermarket first came to Dorking. My mother also worked full time in this store. I worked 2 hours on a Friday evening packing customers bags and all day Saturdays filling shelves and helping customers with packing their shopping. What a fantastic company to work for, the branch had their own Netball Team, held weekly bingo sessions, Quizzes etc. All this was unheard of, I attended a school in Wimbledon and was 16 years old when I started working at Waitrose, we had to be 16 or over as we worked over 8 hours. Prior to working for Waitrose I worked in Woolworths Dorking on a Saturday and got paid 2 shillings an hour, at Waitrose I was paid 2 shillings and sixpense an hour rising to 2 shillings and ninepence hour. Because I was 16 years old I was able to work extra hours in the school holidays. I was at School at Wimbledon Commercial School from 1958 until 1961. I remained working for Waitrose until I left school in the summer of 1961. What happy days – Thank you Waitrose !
