Waitrose Henley

Many happy years at Henley

By Linda Moroney

Waitrose Henley opened on 23 February 1965, slightly earlier than planned for one lucky family: The previous evening, Mr J W Jerram, Food Groups General Manager, saw a distraught customer beckoning at the door. The family had just arrived supperless after a long car journey. No other shops were open. Could Waitrose possibly oblige, even if the shop wasn't opened yet? Waitrose could, and did, with some pork chops.

The layout of the shop was straighforward with four wide aisles running the length of the shop and long runs of tall fixtures between. All of the chilled cabinets were round the outside of the shop - a new idea. As well as the four check-outs by the main Bell Street entrance there were also two more by the back door that led directly to the big public car park behind the shop.

The delicatessen section offered an irresistable variety.

The Waitrose Chronicle of February 1990 pictured Mrs Iris Goodchild and Mrs Doreen Laye, who had seven young children between them, way back in 1965. The ladies decided to ask Waitrose if they could each work part-time, so that they each could help to look after the other's children. The answer was "yes" and so began a very happy Partnership, both in and outside the shop.

Waitrose Henley relocated to a new site in 1994, 50 metres down Bell Street, with Teresa McTeague as branch manager.
