Battle of Flowers

An annual tradition in Jersey, the Battle of Flowers, is a historic event, which pulls in the tourists every year.  This year Partners from St Hellier, St Saviour and Red Houses donated their time through the Partner Volunteering Scheme to help create bags of confetti for the occasion – which was one of the most successful to be held in recent years.

The celebration goes back to 1902 when Jersey decided to hold a parade to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.  it was so successful that it was decided to repeat in the following year and a tradition was established.

In the early days the floats were horse drawn and covered in floral decorations.  The tradition was to tear a flower off the floats and throw it to a lady in the crowd – flowers were sometime thrown back and so the battle was born.
