Kingston: Checkout technology

Waitrose was at the forefront of checkout technology with mobile tills being tested by two branches in Jan 2003.

Kingston was the latest branch to operate the state-of-the-art tills on a trial basis, bringing them to the shop floor on 9th January 2003.

They work on radio frequency, so they are free-standing and can be used within the branch wherever it may choose without any cabling.  They are supported by battery and have approximately seven to ten hours’ life, depending on usage, before they require recharging.
