Hythe's Venetian Fete

Thousands of people gathered on the banks of the Royal Military Canal in Hythe last Wednesday, for the town’s Venetian Fete.

The branch was one of the main sponsors, entering into the spirit of the event with an ‘Only Fools and Horses’ float organised by the social club and a ‘Taste of Italy’ tasting table.

The fete has been held every second year on the third Wednesday in August in one form or another since 1869, and always draws a huge crowd.  This year more than 20,000 people flocked to the canal to watch the proceedings and enjoy picnics in the sunshine.  Stalls lined either side of the canal and a fun fair provided entertainment for the kids.

The 36 floats which were towed individually along the canal by rowing boats, went past the crowds firstly in day light and then again when illuminated, after an impressive firework display.
