Foundation raises £330,000
The Waitrose Foundation was launched in 2005, aimed at securing a better future for South African farm workers through the sales of citrus fruit and in 2006, avocados.
The Foundation raised £330,000 in its first year – 30 per cent more than expected due to overwhelming customer response and resulting strong sales of Waitrose Foundation fruit. At that time the project had already made a difference to the lives of 5,000 farm workers by funding 25 different community initiatives, including training in literacy, IT and life skills development as well as classes in hand crafts, enabling farm workers to make an income out of season when there is no work on the farms.
