Findlater Mackie Todd was acquired by the Partnership on 9th February 1993.  This business had been set up 170 years earlier by a Scotsman, Alexander Findlater who had moved to Dublin to seek his fortune.  The business prospered and by the 1860s he and his partners had established a London base.  By the 1960s the company had almost 50 shops in London and southern parts of England, as well as a cellar in Merton Abbey.

Waitrose was able to develop their mail order business in what became Waitrose Direct, a forerunner of today’s Waitrose.com.
