The Gazette

Mr David Felwick joined the Partnership as a management trainee in November 1982 after a successful career in the Royal Air Force, from which he retired with the rank of Wing Commander. After gaining selling experience at Peter Jones and Tyrrell and Green he was appointed to John Lewis Oxford Street, first as merchandise manager and then as assistant general manager, administration.

In January 1985 he became managing director of John Lewis Welwyn. He transferred from the department stores to the food division on his appointment as Director of Selling, Waitrose in February 1987. Mr Felwick succeeded Mr J Foster as Director of Trading, Food in January 1991.

Mr Felwick became Deputy Chairman of the Partnership on 11 March 2002. The record profit achieved during his last half-year as Director of Trading, Food, was an indication of the assured way in which he had built the distinctive character and reputation of Waitrose during that time.
