Waitrose shoppers lined up outside the new branch on Goldington Road in Bedford from 7am on 9 August waiting for Mayor Dave Hodgson to cut the ribbon and declare the shop officially open.

Partners handed out Waitrose goody bags to shoppers, and champagne and flowers to the first three customers who entered the shop.

At the front of the queue were Anthea and Thomas McCrory. “I’ve been waiting for a Waitrose to open in Bedford for years because there’s very limited choice here,” said Anthea. “There’s a really relaxed atmosphere in the shop and everything is so nicely arranged that it makes our shopping experience a real pleasure.”

The branch has already delivered substantial benefits to the town, including 140 new jobs as well as opportunities for local food producers such as Bedfordshire’s award-winning chilli growers, Edible Ornamentals, and indulgent sweet treats from Nutty Tarts based in St Neots.
