A different cargo for Don

Waitrose lorry driver, Don Howcroft, returned this month from a three-month secondment to the British Red Cross.

A long standing volunteer for the Berkshire BRC he took up the opportunity to be a full-time ambulance driver for the division.

Among the highlights of his service was being put on duty at Windsor for the Queen Mother’s funeral.

However, Don found the personal contact involved in the job the most rewarding aspect and attended five fires with the BRC victim support vehicle during his secondment.

His ability to help people in such circumstances impressed his division so much that they would like him to look after the VSV on a regular basis when he retires next year.
