The original Woodley branch (143) opened in 1970 and moved over the road to its new location in 1983, controversially replacing a terrace of council houses. The current pedestrian area was originally a road with traffic travelling both ways past the shops.

This new building replaced a previous smaller Waitrose store on the opposite side of Crockhamwell Road, where Iceland is now. I remember shopping there with my newborn son in September 1981, but I don’t know when it opened.
