Early interview

My first encounter with Waitrose was on a dark Monday morning at 7.00 in Oct 1961 when I had been told to arrive for an interview. The branch manager, had rung the previous week in answer to a letter I had sent in, having just left school.The interview took place in front of the egg fixture which the manager continued to fill throughout the interview. hardly looking at me he fired a load of questions until finally he said something like “why should I take you on” to which I replied I want to be a grocer!!!. ”That’s a good answer” he said….”start next Monday” and I did ….for 41 years. Throughout the interview not only did he fill the eggs up, a cigarette was stuck in the corner of his mouth which wobbled every time he spoke, how times have changed.
