On 27th September 1987 Waitrose held a garden party at the Odney Club to celebrate 50 years of being part of the John Lewis Partnership.

On sharp, bright day coaches brought Partners from across the country to meet with old colleagues and those who had played an important role in developing the business.  Guests included Stanley Carter, Director of Trading Food from 1967 to 1973, Max Baker and Paul May.  The event was hosted by the then Managing Director Waitrose and Director of Trading Food, John Foster.

Also present were many Partners who remembered working for Mr Waite including Miss Ivy Nutting a former cashier at Chiswick.  She recalled “Mr Waite was the big man, Mr Rose was the small dark one.  He was always immaculate.  And when we saw him coming through the door, we used to smarten up a bit.”

The day ended with the band of the Life Guards playing on the lawns entertaining the 400 guests who incuded the then Chairman Stuart Hampson and former Chairman Peter Lewis.
