Greenford

The Gazette announced the new warehouse at Greenford on the 19th November 1960: “The new warehouse at Greenford which we occupied in March this year was a step to ensure that we had enough space to stock large quantities of food for quick distribution to the shops.”

The warehouse was situated just off the main London-Oxford road (the A40) and as well as housing groceries, provisions etc, it was also an overnight garage and workshop for the heavy transport fleet, with Buying and Merchandising offices, Conference Room, the offices of the General Manager, Sales, and an office for the Director of Trading (Food) and the MD Waitrose, and Printing Department.

The Transport fleet had eight five-ton vans and a magnificent ten-ton articulated diesel van. This vehicle was the largest in the Partnership fleet and was driven by Mr F C McMullen, the smallest driver in the group. The fleet had, in addition, a three-ton diesel breakdown lorry and three three-ton trailers, making eight-eight scheduled Branch deliveries a week, averaging upwards of 3,000 miles a week!
