Waitrose Hayes opened at 482 Uxbridge Road on 12th October 1971. The branch manager was Mr C R Davey, with 65 full-time and 30 part-time staff.
The shop had a large car park for 165 cars – a great advantage due to the fact that it was situated on a busy main road.
The branch closed on 31st July 1999. At the Waitrose Branch Council meeting tribute was paid “to all Hayes Partners past and present, who had worked so hard to ensure that the Waitrose name would not be forgotten by loyal customers in and around Hayes”.

Spent a period of time working here as wine manager, in those days all the wines were behind a counter. Some of the names that I worked with here were Steve S, Micky P, Ron B. Branch Manager was Charlie Davey and his Deputy was Bob Tidball.
Later in my career I work at Romsey with John C who was Charlie’s brother in law.
I had a number of jobs at Hayes. Del Manager. Evening Shift Manager. I spent about 4 years there between 1972-76, I remember Jim Baker very well after meeting him on my first ever day at work at the Hounslow branch in 1970. Charlie Davey was manager at that time and he took me on as a trainee manager. I knew all the people Jim knew. As a trainee manager I got to work at a lot of branches including Chiswick and Hayes. I stayed with Waitrose until 1984 when I went to work for a local newspaper in Abingdon. My last job at Waitrose was at Wallingford where my career was scuppered by the branch manager who for some reason did not care for my management style!!. Not to worry though. I started my own company in 1998 and made enough to retire at 49 when I sold up and moved to live in Thailand where I have been living happily for 15 years. I will always look back fondly on my youth spent at Waitrose. We had some great fun and I met some wonderful people
Just seen this article while browsing. I worked for Waitrose from August 1969 until June 1973 when I left to join the police in London.
Sad to see this branch had closed. I moved here from Hounslow to help open the branch as ‘First Hand’ on grocery with Charlie Davey, Ron Barker, Graham Bassett, Steve Shore and a host of others I could still name. We had a pretty good football team at the time with some of the Saturday boys playing for us. It was only the drivers from Bracknell we had trouble with!
I moved back to Hounslow as Non – Food manager and then moved to open East Sheen as Non – Food manager with Bill Pratt as manager before I left to join the police. Time flies. I’ve been retired from the police for over 13 years after 30 plus years service but still remember Waitrose with great affection.
This was my first Waitrose experience. I started there on the 9th June 1976, as ASM Provisions. The Branch Manager was Bob Tidball, Dave Spurling Deputy manager and Jack Williams as assistant manager. My section manager was Ron Barker. What a great time we had.
