The very first supermarket to have opened in Barry 32 years ago, is now proudly operating under the ‘Waitrose’ name. Opening firstly as a Tower Discounts this store later became a Presto, Safeway and now Waitrose. The branch is the tenth to be acquired from Morrisons/Safeway and is the third Waitrose to have opened in Wales.
Vida Slack (the branch’s delicatessen assistant) celebrated her 65th birthday on opening day and has worked in the store since it’s opening 32 years ago. She was invited to cut the ribbon and officially open the store, alongside Lynn Dixon (the branches Assistant dry goods 1) who was also celebrating her birthday on opening day.
The store offers customers a petrol station, a 300 space car park, an attractive cafe and the areas best supermarket assortment. The branch opening has been advertised locally on Red Dragon FM and on hoarding posters as you enter Barry. Leaflets have been delivered to over 50,000 local households and vouchers were published in local newspapers.
The promotional activity appeared to have been a success, as the branch reported sales of 50% more than estimate, with customers driving for miles to visit the store. Partners who worked for the former Safeway store couldn’t remember experiencing such a busier day’s trading, even at Christmas.
