East Sheen: Opening

Waitrose East Sheen 149 opened on 20th March 1973.

The following article appeared in the Partnership in-house magazine at the time.
Large, clear plate glass windows; the familiar white and orange lettering; car park at the back; shelves neatly stacked and filled to capacity; a welcoming Partner at the door handing out baskets – the opening of Waitrose East Sheen. With 10,800 square feet of selling space it is the Food Group’s third largest branch and the first of eight new ones this year [1973].
The size of the shop means very long shelves and the immediate effect is of a vast quantity of goods and the longest meat freezer and dairy cabinet in Waitrose [at the time] – the latter 56 feet with five shelves.

The cashiers and packers were trained at Hounslow and Slough and last week two cashiers went to Temple Fortune, partly to complete their training and partly because that branch was short of staff.
The deputy manager, Mr L. Goodman was previously a management trainee.
