Winton (161): Opening

Waitrose Winton officially opened on March 21st 1978, as the sixty-sixth store to open.

With almost 13,500 sq ft of selling space, Winton was one of the larger Waitrose branches of its time. Mr T A Jordan opened the store with eighty full and part time partners.

There is a designated Waitrose car park that stretches from above ground to underground, the first of its kind in 1978, which therefore came with its problems. A pump was then installed to make sure it never flooded when it rained. (As reported in the Partnerships in-house magazine, The Gazette, 25/03/78).

Services and facilities available at Winton include: flower and gift wrapping and a patisserie and bakery counter.

Address: 345 Wimborne Road, Winton, Bournemouth, Dorset, BH9 2AD

  • Mr Jordan was still the manager at 161 Winton throughyout the period I worked there part time between 1998 and 2001 – whilst studying at the University. I was employed specifically as a Sunday assistant on double time (the branch was just about to start opening Sundays). I was the last person to leave (of those taken on to cover Sundays) in 2001, having completed my studies (a degree in retail management). I have good memories of Mr Jordan and the then team at Winton, but had never realised just how long he had managed to store.
