Wellington (315) : Opening

Waitrose Wellington opened on 28/01/2010. The following article appeared in the
Partnership’s in-house magazine The Gazette dated 05/02/2010.

“Wellington beefs up the shopping offer

Waitrose Wellington opened last Thursday to a warm welcome from customers and local businesses. The latest Somerset branch was officially opened by the town’s Mayor, Peter Critchard, who believes its arrival will have a positive impact on the area.

His view was reinforced by David Derrick, Secretary of Wellington Chamber of Trade and Commerce, who said: “Attracting a big market player such as Waitrose to our town is good for choice and will bring a new shopping experience.”

Customers – who have helped the branch to sales well over budget– were equally enthusiastic about the new arrival. Store Manager Simon Lambert explains: “Lots of customers told me that they had been waiting years for Waitrose to arrive and it was clear from the shopping pattern over the weekend that many of them were already familiar with our brand.

“Customers have also pointed out that although there are other supermarkets in town, none offer our range of product, and our fresh-fish counter and organic fruit and vegetable assortment have done particularly well,” says Simon, who has been seconded from Saltash for nine months.

The small town format branch is now established in premises built for Somerfield but never used. The fit-out included the new green refrigeration system currently being rolled out, and a 36-seater coffee shop. “
