Saffron Walden (135): Opening

Waitrose Saffron Walden opened on 05/11/1985

The opening day for the new Waitrose in Saffron Walden was greatly anticipated, with a queue of more than 100 expectant customers waiting for the branch to open. Situated a few miles from the M11, the shopping precinct containing Waitrose stood on the site of an ancient pig market. Waitrose filled a large portion of the neo-Georgian building, with the entrance approached by a plant-filled passageway.

The two-storey car park accommodated customers’ cars with its 320 spaces. Inside the shop, customers could visit the service counters which included delicatessen, patisserie, meat and fish counters.

Behind the scenes in the large warehouse, mobile racking had been installed on a much larger scale than in other Waitrose branches.
