Stevenage (167): Opening

Located in the Old Town, Waitrose Stevenage opened on 18th July 1978.

With management keen for the branch to fit in with its surroundings the branch was given a suitable shop front in order for it to blend in and become part of the local community.

Adjoining Blundell’s department store, Waitrose took 10,000 sq. foot of the department stores selling space to create a modern supermarket, with a self service wine department with its own door and two separate checkout lines to cater for both those coming from the high street and those making use of the large car park at the rear of the store.

There was no problem with recruitment, as for the 85 jobs, almost 800 people applied.

Waitrose Stevenage closed on 27 October 2019.  It was reported that over 2000 people signed a petition in a bid to save the store.

Former address: 74a High Street, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, SG1 3EH
